The Easy Part About Art

It sure is not producing it.

Art is a medium to express and convey feelings, often accompanied by emotions. This medium can have multiple subjective divisions, like the Traditional Seven Arts: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, Literature, Music, Performing, and Film. It can also be subdivided into the Liberal Seven Arts: grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy.

One can state the Liberal Arts do not convey feelings and emotions, but I would beg to differ. Rhetoric and grammar lead to finer expressions used in Music and Literature. Geometry enhances architectural designs. The theory of music contributes to the advance of its traditional counterpart, and astronomy is the study of Humanity’s oldest muse — the heavenly night skies.

Art has two sides to a story: someone that tells it — artist — and someone that absorbs and processes it — observer. As natural as art not existing before being created, it also does not exist before being seen, listened to, felt.

Much like Schrodinger’s cat, how can someone’s work be taken as art before it is felt? Sure enough, right after we feel and label it as art, we are certain that its inception aimed to make it, and that its maker is an artist.

Artistically speaking, what separates a 13th century poet, from a 21st century middle-aged person grunting the most beautiful insults to life whilst driving through traffic?

Yet, I do acknowledge the middle-aged person’s pain. I understand him, respect him, and most likely smile and laugh at the creativity that often comes in those circumstances. On the other hand, I would likely not understand and want to read the poets words.

However, should I say that the Medieval Age poet’s name is Dante Alighieri, you would take him as the artist he was, and for his full portfolio to be comprised of art. Would the grunting person be Ricky Gervais on his latest After Life season, and we would be cheering for one more sketch of British comedy.

Art and recognition go hand in hand chiefly because us, as Humans, we love user experience. We evolved to eat only a selection of berries or run as fast as possible if someone runs past us looking afraid. Hence, we are willing to lose our time reading a book advised to us, or see the latest Tarantino movie. As it is the proven evolutionary method for safety and time keeping, we go with the flow.

Creating it is hard! One can tap the shutter button or practice his way through the canvas, but that is just materialization.

Creation is about selection, trial, and error. Passing on feelings, generating emotions on different brains, is challenging. A black dot on canvas can be more fulfilling than an entire mural. An image can be worth a thousand words, and thousand words can be worth a 30 seconds solo.

Discovering it is as hard! Art discovery is not for the masses, as discoveries never were. They are for the intrepid, and time wasting persons. But what is time waste when you value more the change and growth that come with it?

The easy part is speaking about it, commenting fondly or loathly. Bringing down on other people’s likes and dislikes:

We use and abuse people’s likes on art to assess them. Mainstream, pop, alternative, or geek, we have a myriad of labels. We will not try to understand others, it is easier to classify them on what we know.
