More Than Stars

Dark Night by Swan Animations on Unity Assets Store

Glowing roofs of sweeping stars above us, tiny lights in the dark expanse of the sky. A soft spring breeze; still, quiet air.

“Do you want some spider cake?”

I sigh. “You realize you just ruined the moment, right?”

She takes an over-sized bite of cake. “What moment?” Crumbs spew out of her mouth and she swallows. “I’m just enjoying the spider cake. Want some?” She holds out the entire cake pan to me.

“No!” I push the pan back. “What if parts of him are still in there?”

“I got all of him out, silly,” she says. She licks some frosting off her finger. “Or I didn’t and he’s just the special ingredient making this extra delicious. And extra leg-y.”

“You’re disgusting.”

“We didn’t spend all evening making a rainbow cake for nothing. So I plan to savor it. Spider or not.”

We sit in silence, the stars ever shining.

I push my foot against the rough porch floor, moving the swing backward. I lift my foot and the swing creaks, gliding forward.

“Fine. I’ll have some.”

She looks up from the cake, frosting smeared on her lips. “Really?”

Before I change my mind, I take the pan from her and use the fork to scoop a bite into my mouth.

“See you can’t even taste the spider!”

“It is pretty delicious…”

We laugh and I look back at the stars.

“We should do this more often,” I murmur, handing the pan back to her.

“Having spiders fall from the ceiling into the cake batter?”

“No — sitting out here. Under the stars.”

“Yeah….”

I sit back in the swing, realizing not all beauty comes from things pleasing to the eye. The stars may have their glory, but joy can come from anywhere.

Even a spider in a rainbow cake.
