IBM helps Nirmaan empower underprivileged children with accessible education opportunities

IBM has a long association with Nirmaan working to provide accessible education to students from county’s underprivileged section by providing them equal opportunity to pursue their career goals which can improve their standard of life and in long run build a knowledge driven and economically empowered nation.

This year IBM CSR India team collaborated with Nirmaan to take their career guidance program to next level. Biggest challenge for students to have a chance at making a better career is lack of information about career choices and appropriate guidance, lack of funds and family support for continuing studies. There is no single avenue to get all information that is required and though through their endeavors over past 15 years Nirmaan has gathered vast amount of career guidance information making it accessible to students from underprivileged societies still poses a big challenge for majority of these students do not have internet or mobile to access this information.

Nirmaan’s mission is to bridge this gap by adding volunteers to their program (Career Advancement Platform) who are motivated to devote their time to help guide students in long run throughout their journey enabling them to make wise decisions at critical junctures.

During our engagement with Nirmaan we designed a solution which does not only consolidate information and services that organization has built over years but a single platform to connect mentors and students. Motivate volunteers to use this platform to help students effectively and in timely manner. It will enable willing donors to help students in need so they can continue their studies and pursue their goals.

IBM team in collaboration with Nirmaan came up with a design which will intelligently send critical updates and alerts about colleges, jobs etc to students in timely manner without volunteers or students need to search for it making information accessible. In our ideation sessions we came up with design which will help build a community of students and volunteers to help each other and motivate beneficiaries of platform to become volunteers for it to further platform’s reach and help more and more students.

Working on this CSR project was a unique and rewarding experience. The realization of what an impact this work will bring to lives of thousands of students is humbling and at the same time motivation for us to continue to engage in such initiatives to use technology for good inline with IBM’s spirit of GoodTech.

It was truly humbling experience for we received most amazing and satisfying reward for our work at culmination of our engagement by students themselves in form of beautiful handmade card, artwork and poetry as token of thanks which only strengthened our belief that the work we did is going to bring an meaningful impact and help change a lot of lives for good.
