How to Publish a Booklet Easily with MS Word

Writing a book is running a marathon. Publishing a booklet is an energizing run around the block.

We write books and it takes a long time. It takes “ blood, toil, tears and sweat,” as Winston Churchill might have put it.

But everything is not a book. Every idea or problem does not justify writing a book.

While you’re still working on your 500-page opus magnum, you may feel the need to print much shorter booklets, for one mundane reason or another.

To bring the new employees up to speed in your office, you may want to hammer out a 16-page handbook about how to operate the Xerox machine, how to re-order ink and stationary, and the proper etiquette to follow in the lunch room, etc.

Or perhaps you’d like to print a booklet for each month of your diary, compiled from daily notes written in Word. At the end of the year, you’d have 12 booklets, one for each month — a mini-library of the waters that have gone under the bridge.

It’s very easy to produce MS Word booklets in traditional book format, with perfect pagination.

1. Launch MS Word. Open your booklet document. Select the Page Layout tab. IMPORTANT TIP: For the best results, make sure the total number of pages in your document is a whole multiple of 4, like 8, 12, 16, etc. If not, make the necessary edits (decrease/increase font size, change your page margins, add/delete content, etc.) to make sure that your total page number is a multiple of 4.

2. Click the little expansion arrow on the lower-right corner of the tab to display the Page Setup dialog:

3. In the Margins tab, select Book Fold option from the Pages > Multiple Pages drop down list.

4. From the Sheets per Booklet drop-down list, select the number of pages that should be in your booklet. E.g., 16.
