An Ugly Bunch of People

A venetian reggae band and their prophetic intuition about Elon Musk’s martian goals

Would you imagine this guy predicting Elon Musk’s endeavour to reach Mars, in a song written 30 years ago?

With an album title like that, literally meaning “an ugly bunch of people”, you might assume that the band in question is ironically talking about themselves. Pitura Freska’s (venetian for “Wet Paint”) rebellious attitude would be actually compatible with that kind of claim.

However, if you were to listen to the title track it would become clear that this is not the case. In fact, the song is actually being sung from the perspective of the nice guys in the band, criticizing those who rule upon us and describing them as an ugly bunch of people:

The song makes no claims to great depths; it simply lists some reasons to be outraged at the world’s prominent people’s lack of interest in resolving common people’s problems. Its real value lies in the band’s musical abilities and the song’s original usage of the venetian dialect.

The way we identify “those who rule us” has most likely changed in the last 30 years. Since 1991, multibillionaires have risen to prominence as global celebrities who shape public opinion and frequently select the themes that pique the public’s interest:

As a supreme example of this approach, instead of resolving problems on Earth, one of those powerful guys focus his efforts on planet Mars.
