Raising A Kid With Special Needs

A story about a kid with developmental delays

My son was such a beautiful baby. He was always smiling all the time and seemed to be a happy baby. He was my first baby so, he taught me everything I know about being a mom. I remember he used to crawl so fast and he never took to pacifiers. He also never took to table food well after taking him off of the breast. I always struggled with the fact that he didn’t have much of an appetite… I took him to the doctor to get answers and I was always told he would grow out of it. I later found from a pediatric gastroenterologist that it was because he was lactose intolerant that caused him to be clogged up and full all the time; pushing him away from the plate and not gaining any weight.

As of now, Sean is still very small in weight. He struggles with being skinny and thin because of his extreme food allergy to dairy products. He’s also been such a picky eater for most of his childhood. Gaining weight always been a challenge for him because we’ve never been successful with getting him to stick to a diet. I’d given him suggestions but he would always have his own ideas and preferences.

In his toddler years, my son learned how to speak late and no one understood him but me. He learned to tie his shoes late, he loss his baby teeth late, and he never gravitated towards other children. He always seemed satisfied with entertaining himself. There was also this thing he did… twirling in circles and staring at the ceiling at these odd times. He was crazy about monster trucks and nothing else. His tantrums were head-banging, which was frightening for me as a parent. Then he later developed an interest in football and then basketball. My son’s slow development was a huge concern for me and I worried about what type of life he would be able to lead in the future.

Autism is what I suspected at first because my son was showing some signs and tendencies that were giving my husband and I the impression. We had him tested at this head start program (for special needs children that he attended), and we had his pediatrician take a look at him and no one confirmed it was autism. My son’s schooling was a challenge as well. He wasn’t put in the correct academic program until he was in 7th grade. We finally started seeing progress being made and evidence of him thriving. We…
