Why I Still Love Fashion Under Lockdown

On designer duds and the joy of bargain hunting

She and I, both of us at the time smack in the middle of selling our homes and moving, and both of us athletes, spend way way way too much time in Lycra workout gear.

I’ve seen her in full presentation mode. She’s got gorgeous clothing and the athletic body to fill it out. She has powerful, shapely arms that look terrific in short sleeves.

When she said that my first thought was damn, I wish I could do that.

I might note that you and I DO NOT have to have a slim perfect model’s body to wear superb clothing, feel good and look out of this world. Kindly, before some Justice Warrior comes after my aging ass, any body can wear fashion that allows you to feel special. Sometimes it takes some searching but it’s out there.

Since February of 2019 I’ve been boxing, packing and storing all my gear, and that included all my designer clothing.

Now mind you, the quarantine gave me plenty of ways to pack on the pounds. I gormed chocolate almonds, which- as I discovered a few weeks ago-caused me to gain back some twenty pounds.

Which, kindly, is fine if all you wear is Lycra, which has a lovely habit of stretching with you, without showing stretch marks the way skin does.

Okay, well, the waistbands, not so much. But while my stuff was in storage, and much still is in boxes, my body expanded to the point where there was no WAY I could zip my favorite pants or skirt.

Sigh.

I resigned myself, for the short term, to living in Lycra.

When I lived in Spokane I wrote a regular fashion column for the then-Spokane Woman magazine. I titled it Runway to Realway, without realizing that the title was already being used elsewhere.
