Exploring Into Music Video Trailers

The trailer of a video presents a summary or a preview of what will be a movie, video game, or video clip, among other audiovisual projects. For my project, I chose to create 2 music video trailers of existing songs, one for the song “Loop” by Martin Garrix & Dallas K, and the other for the song “Adventure of a Lifetime” by Coldplay.

The purpose of this project is to put into practice the resources and skills I have learned during my studies at Humber, but also to test my autonomy. For the past 11 weeks, I have been researching, sketching, recording, and editing to create the 2 music video trailers.

I have always loved music and wanted to combine my knowledge of design, photography, animation, video creation, and editing with music. I have always wanted to focus my work on the music industry, and I feel that this was a good opportunity to focus my work on music.

To start any project it is important to have a work plan, I knew I had to dedicate time to do some research to have a clear idea of what my project would be.

For the research part, I was in charge of looking for music video trailer references and other videos on Youtube, which in the end served as inspiration and ideation for my project. The songs I chose belong to very different genres of music, so I watched music videos of Pop and EDM music to take into account the style that manages each musical genre.

After looking for references, I started to define the styles I wanted for my videos. For this definition, I used Mood boards which are a creative tool that consists of a quick visualization of images, colours, and even words that help to prepare the ideation phase of a project.

After defining the style of the videos, the pre-production phase begins. Use storyboards as it is a tool that consists of a set of illustrations that present a sequence, this in order to preview and plan the structure that will have the videos. It is also a tool that opens the way to the production phase, since having a clear idea of the story to be told in the video, you can create or record the necessary scenes to achieve the final result.

This is the stage in charge of collecting the content that will be used to produce what was established in the previous stages.
Here I was in charge of going out to the streets of Toronto to record the content for the Loop video, while for the Adventure of a lifetime video I collected the necessary images to start the editing. On the other hand, using the Adobe Audition tool, I edited and cut the part of the song that I was going to use for each of the videos. In summary, the content was ready to enter the post-production phase.

After recording and collecting the necessary material for the project, the post-production phase begins. This is the phase where all the work done during the last weeks is implemented and the phase that will give way to the final result. For this stage, I used Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Media Encoder to assemble, edit and finally export the final video.

What were my project goals, and did I meet them?

When I started this project, I knew that I had to accomplish several tasks to complete the final project. For me it was very important to start with a weekly work plan that would guide me with the tasks that I had to accomplish to complete the whole project, thanks to this I was able to fulfill all the stages that I had established from the beginning:
- Ideation
- Pre-production
- Production
- Post-production

Difficulties:

One of the biggest difficulties was the creation of the idea for the videos since I had to consider factors such as budget, resources, and time, so I had to spend time looking for references and sketching my ideas to be able to specify the steps I had to follow to finish the project.

What did I learn about video production?

I learned that it is a world with many possibilities. Also, it is an area where you have to be very compliant with the tasks that are stipulated from the beginning since each task opens the door to start another one. I also learned that if there is any difficulty it is important to have a plan B or even a plan C since the time lost will greatly affect the steps to follow.

What did I learn about myself ?

I learned that I am capable of creating personal projects and finishing them. I learned that I am curious and I like to learn new things, I had the opportunity to direct this project as I wanted, and I had several options to carry out the project but in the end, I am satisfied with the decisions I made for the final result. I am a resourceful person and I learned that if I encounter difficulties along the way I am capable enough to find solutions and move forward.
