Climate Change

Public communications on climate change have been first raised in the mid-to-late 1980’s (Moser, 2010). The World Climate Programme, established in 1979 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), identified climate change in the sense of our society. Some studies argue that our society’s attitude towards climate change is devoted to different character traits, such as age, gender, educational level, location, political interest and societal behavior (Dunlap & Brulle, 2015; Ojala, 2015).

Concluding, based on the current research, current media is associated with the perception of climate change and that education and awareness should be used to create a behavioral change (Moser, 2017; Ojala, 2015).

Climate Strike and Greta Thunberg

Since September 2018, speeches of Greta Thunberg have motivated youth to globally strike action against the climate crisis, which is referred to as “School Strikes 4 Climate, Fridays for Future and Youth for Climate.” (Holmberg & Alvinius, 2019) According to Holmberg and Alvinius (2019), they strike to raise attention on the climate crisis and its consequences by protesting against the lack of measures that are currently taken by powerful and responsible authorities. According to Feldman and Sol Hart (2017), seeing texts and pictures of climate strikes on media can result in hope and motivation of the audience to strike action as well.

Literature review already showed that Greta is central in discussions, in order to gather new insights, the search terms ‘#climatestrike AND #fridaysforfuture -”@gretathunberg”’ have been used to collect data from the source Twitter in Netlytic. Figures 5 till 12 below refer to posts that contain both #climatestrike and #fridaysforfuture without mentioning @gretathunberg. Data was collected on Friday 13th, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th of December 2019, once per day and updated for the last time on Sunday at 14:46:14. Data collection resulted in 1396 messages and 1073 unique posters.
