Load test with Locust

From my point of view, Locust is an open source load testing tool and one of the many alternatives to Jmeter. It allows you to write tests in Python and its implementation is based on tasks. To be…

SEMISPHERES

An atmospheric puzzle piece.

Overview:

Semispheres is an atmospheric parallel puzzle game developed by Vivid Helix. The player uses both analog sticks to control two characters in parallel worlds that often intertwine through portals. At first, these worlds seem equal- but they unfold to be profoundly different as you play through this nifty little puzzle game.

Storyline:

Semispheres storyline is so subtle that at first, you don’t even know it’s there. Fragments of the story begin to be revealed to the player through charming illustrations after the first set of puzzles is completed. The story can be a little hard to follow at times but is overall a heart-warming tale. Unfortunately, a design choice leaves the player unable to view the sketches in their entirety as the game resets upon completion- I found this disappointing as I would’ve loved to view the images consecutively.

Gameplay:

After getting used to controlling parallel screens, I loved the way this game felt to play. The characters moved so elegantly throughout the levels and every aspect responded well to the joy-con controllers. In terms of puzzles- things heat up quickly after the first few levels, and there were definitely some levels I was stumped with. Semispheres introduces new ideas well, and you are given the opportunity to hone your skills before being faced with a particularly challenging puzzle. The game also groups puzzles into sets of four and rewards the player with a story illustration each time a set is completed. Allowing the player to shoot for smaller goals really stops the puzzles from getting too frustrating and overwhelming.

One thing I really liked about playing on the Switch was that it also doubles as an accidental co-op game- just give a joy-con to a friend. While this does take away from the dual-control feature, it can be just as challenging trying to the complete the puzzles with two brains.

Graphics:

Graphically, Semispheres is beautiful and full of wonder- the character’s float gracefully throughout the space provided and the mesmerising colours help differentiate the parallel worlds and characters. Each completed puzzle set resembles star constellations and the overall level design lends feelings of an otherworldly place.

Audio:

The soundtrack, composed by Sid Barhoon, is one of my favourite parts of this game- it’s atmospheric and ambient tones will leave you feeling relaxed, immersed and a little like your floating in space. All at once.

Should you?

As someone who usually gets extremely frustrated at puzzle games, I found Semispheres unexpectedly relaxing. I loved the ambient tones guiding you as you progressed through the beautifully designed levels, and I honestly wish it wasn’t so short. Semispheres is full of challenging puzzles, and I really think it brings some fresh ideas to the genre. If you’re a lover of puzzle games this is certainly one to consider. Especially on the switch where it doubles as a fun, potentially stressful co-op.
